make user search less strict, allow partial word etc

currently if a customer searches for "smirno" they are returned no results, if the same customer then searches "smirnoff" they are shown matches products. I note that in the HCC Admin section when searching for products a partial word search will return results. Is there a way for us to relax the search parameters of the front end user search to use partial word search?
